What happened

Autumn 2018Initial consultation.
Summer 2022Engagement on updated plans — by now the route runs via Grantchester, not Hauxton and Trumpington.
December 2022Executive Board approval to proceed.
June–July 2023Detailed consultation on the 2.5 km through Grantchester. 73% of Grantchester respondents object; 64% of all respondents support.
4 January 2024Board approves the Grantchester route despite village objections. The M11 bridge is to be made step-free.
End 2024Planning application anticipated.
December 2025Final design phases; biodiversity plans finalised; landowner and National Highways liaison ongoing.

Where it stands, September 2026

In final design with a planning submission approaching. The adopted route runs Haslingfield – Canteloupe Farm – Grantchester – Cambridge Rugby FC – Barton Road, using the Canteloupe Farm accommodation bridge over the M11 that the 2016 review examined as Option iv and dismissed because 'agreement seems unlikely'. Agreement was reached. Everything else the review recommended for this corridor — the Hauxton bridleway, the Cam bridge at the former treatment works, and the Trumpington works — was dropped when the alignment changed.
